A new website for a growing community

News2 min read

We have relaunched our website in Spanish, English and Brazilian Portuguese, with Discover, a word game and an Al-Andalus timeline. Here is what is new, and why.

The Latin Muslim Association began as a small group of Colombian Muslims sharing their faith with friends and family. Over the years it has grown into a UK registered charity supporting Muslims and new Muslims across Latin America. Our new website is built for that wider family.

Three languages: Spanish, English and Brazilian Portuguese

Latin America does not only speak Spanish. Brazil is home to a large part of the continent, and supporting Latin America means speaking Portuguese too. Every page now has an ES, EN and BR switch at the top, so everyone can read in the language of their home.

Discover: short, sourced answers

Discover answers the questions people ask us most: can you be Latino and Muslim, what Muslims believe about Mary and Jesus, how Islam reached the Americas, and much more. Every answer lists its sources, so you can check for yourself.

A word game and a timeline

Did you know that azúcar, algodón and ajedrez reached Spanish through Arabic? In Words that connect us you can browse these connections, test yourself in ten questions and share your score with friends.

Al-Andalus: a shared history tells, in 16 chapters, how Muslims, Christians and Jews lived side by side in Iberia, from 711 to today. It is honest about the exchange and friendship, and about the conflicts and wounds too.

Why this matters to us

Many people in Latin America only meet Islam through the news. We want to show something different: that our languages, our food, our music and our history are already shared. We are neighbours, with more in common than we often think.

This News page is where we will share our events and projects from now on. Follow us on Instagram, and if you have a question or would like to help, write to us.
